Pembelajaran dan Aktivitas Mahasiswa SDG 4, SDG 17

Earlier this year, 2023, the Ministry of Education and Culture opened a continuation of Kampus Mengajar 4 program. Kampus Mengajar is a program organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture that collaborates with universities to encourage their students to practicing teaching, socializing, and organizing community services at once in school needs help. Starting from January this year, when the registration of Kampus Mengajar 5 was opened, it already attracted a lot of students since its offers are beneficial. The final announcement, which was launched through students’ email, brought happiness to whom were accepted. After the final announcement, students who were accepted were required to attend a pre-seminar in order to enrich their basic knowledge regarding Indonesia’s curriculum and how to deal with school and students. Once the pra-seminar(s) ended, those who were accepted, along with the lecturer in charge of each school, were allowed to visit the school and start their journey of Kampus Mengajar 5 this year. The students’ team, lecturer, and the school would be worked together in 4 (four) months to upgrade the school, help the school in both education and administration, and gained new challenging experiences together. This year, I was given the opportunity to join this program and I was instructed to help Bina Bangsa School Malang.

Joining Kampus Mengajar 5 means as students who are given a chance to participate in education in Indonesia directly, we need to plan several kinds of activities to help the school’s students, teachers, staff, and the surrounding to build a suitable and better situation of teaching and learning. Year by year, students are required to master different skills. This year, 21st Century Skills are widely known as the standard of learning outcomes. Therefore, as university students, we are responsible for inviting the school to be aware of today’s issues. Planning some activities that focus on literation and numeracy, which also involve critical and creative thinking and collaborative behavior, will help both teams of Kampus Mengajar 5 and Bina Bangsa School Malang to achieve fulfill the demand of the 21st century skills.

The plan started with observing what the school needs. Observing was done thoroughly since the plan of activities must be suitable for the students. After a one-week-long observation, some problems were found and needed to be solved by implementing some activities that involved students and teachers. Some activities were planned to be done inside the class, and the rest were outside the class. The reason why activities needed to be occurred in two different places was to encourage students to be active in both inside and outside their class. The other reason was through those two different places, students’ expertise will be shown differently.

Picture 2. Teaching Mathematics in English inside the Classroom

Above is one of the implementations of the program that aims the creative and critical thinking. Simple math problems were given, and students were asked to solve the problems. The creative and critical thinking here was focused on how students solve the mathematics problem  with their own way.

Picture 3. Students Practicing Outdoor Class

Above is one of the implementations of the program that aims at collaborative behavior. Students are asked to plan plants that last longer than the other plants since the plants will be sold to the parents and staffs in the school. Through this program, students studied numeracy and life skill at the same time.

Picture 4. Students are trained to be brave to voice their opinions

Not only the hard skills, but also the soft skill that is trained through Kampus Mengajar 5’s programs. From the picture above, students are trained to be brave in any situation. Students who are vocal tend to be aware of their surroundings and easily adapt to any condition. This motivates the team to encourage students to be brave in front of a lot of audience. We believe that through this training, students will be brave enough to voice their opinion when they are facing the next opportunity.

During Ramadhan, students are also invited to organize some kind of mini community service called Berbagi Ramadhan which shared foods and drinks in Ramadhan. Through this program, students were trained on soft skills, especially socializing with surrounding. They build their awareness and care for others. This can be one of a practice of socializing with the bigger society outside the school.

After 4 (four) months in Bina Bangsa School Malang, there are so many experiences gained which some of the are new to university students. As the purpose of Kampus Mengajar 5 is to help and gain new experience in teaching and learning; this can be said that the purpose is achieved. As someone who is accepted by Kampus Mengajar 5 and got the opportunity to practice while learning, I was glad and grateful for this program that has helped me to develop my learning and teaching experience which might be useful for my future career.
