English Language Teaching (ELT) Programme, Departement of English, Faculty of Letters held a Guest Lecture on 15th September 2017. The speaker of the guest lecture was Dr. Willy A. Renandya of National Institute of Education (NIE) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore. This guest lecture was attended by the First Vice Rector of Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Prof. Dr. Budi Eko Soetjipto, M.Ed, the Head of Department of English, Dr. Johannes A. Prayogo, M.Pd., M.Ed, and the Secretary of the Department, Dr. Suharyadi, M.Pd. The guest lecture was also attended by 240 participants including students and lecturers.

 

The guest lecture is aimed to open the participants’ horizon on what attributes a teacher must have to be a professional language teacher. Dr. Renandya shared his ideas on “What Makes an Effective English Language Teacher: The Harmony of Three Hs (Head, Heart, and Hands)”.  He believes that an effective teacher is professionally competent, skillful, engaging, caring and passionate.

 

The participants looked enthusiastic. They listened to Dr. Renandya’s explanation attentively and zealously asked questions in the end of the guest lecture.
